The Deck Doesn't Lie the Way a Tee Shot Can

A fairway wood swing off a tee tells you very little about how the same club performs off the deck, so we don't stop at the tee box when fitting one.

The Local Wrinkle

Bermuda Grips a Sole Differently Than You'd Expect

Compared to cooler-season grasses, South Florida bermuda grows dense and slightly wiry, and it punishes a fairway wood sole that isn't shaped for it. A sole that would glide cleanly through softer northern turf can catch and stall here, particularly on a tight, well-mowed lie. Rounder, wider soles tend to handle that density better; flatter designs suit players with a shallower, sweeping swing who prefer a lower, more piercing ball flight.

We confirm this with an actual turf sample cut to match local density, not a swing on the launch monitor alone — the sole-to-ground interaction only shows up once the ball is sitting on something real.

A Pattern We See Often

A sole built too flat for a moderately steep attack angle tends to snag on tight bermuda, and the resulting miss can look like either a thin or a heavy strike depending on exactly where it catches.

The Fitting Itself

What Actually Gets Checked

01

Sole-to-Turf Behavior

Multiple head shapes run through the same turf sample so we can watch, not guess, how each one interacts with your specific attack angle.

02

Loft for a Real Gap

Set to bridge your driver and longest iron cleanly, based on your actual carry numbers rather than the loft printed on the sole.

03

Shaft Feel at a Different Tempo

Most players swing a fairway wood a touch differently than a driver, and shaft weight gets adjusted for that difference specifically.

04

Confirmed Off the Ground

Nothing gets recommended until it's been hit off an actual lie sample — a tee shot alone doesn't tell the whole story.

See It Perform Off a Real Lie

We won't recommend a fairway wood based on a tee shot alone — every candidate gets tested off the deck first.
