Sand Density Changes Your Bounce Need

A 10-degree bounce plays two different rounds of golf depending on whether the sand underneath it is coarse or fine. Here's why, and how we account for it.

Ask most golfers what their sand wedge's bounce number means, and they'll describe resistance to digging — which is true, but incomplete. What that resistance actually feels like depends heavily on what's underneath the club, and bunker sand is far from a uniform surface across different courses.

Coarse Sand vs. Fine Sand

Coarse, shell-heavy sand — common on older South Florida courses built with local coquina material — packs firmer and resists the club more than it looks like it should. A wedge with too much bounce on coarse sand can bounce the leading edge into the ball instead of through it, producing a bladed shot. Fine, imported silica sand behaves almost the opposite way: it offers less resistance, so a low-bounce wedge that performed fine on coarse sand can dig and leave shots short.

Why We Keep a Sand Tray on the Bench

We refill our sand tray periodically with samples pulled from bunkers at courses our clients actually play, rather than a single generic mix. Hitting real shots into a tray matched to your home course tells us far more about entry angle and displacement than describing the sand verbally ever could.

What This Means for a Fitting

If you regularly play more than one course with noticeably different bunker sand, we'll flag it and talk through whether a single grind can reasonably split the difference or whether you're better off with two wedges tuned for two conditions. Most players don't need two; a moderate, versatile bounce profile usually covers a range of sand types acceptably well.

Signs Your Bounce Doesn't Match Your Sand

Consistent thin contact out of soft, fine sand often points to too little bounce. Consistent bladed or skulled shots out of firm, coarse sand often points to too much. Either pattern is worth bringing up at your next fitting rather than assuming it's purely a technique issue.

A bounce number by itself only tells part of the story. What it's tested against — and whether that test surface matches the courses you actually play — matters just as much.
